FINDING GROWTH IN COMFORT: WALLOWS Model ALBUM REVIEW

Everyone’s favorite indie pop/rock trio, Wallows, is back with their third studio album, Model. Following their second album, Tell Me That It's Over, which saw the band experimenting with new sounds distinct from their indie rock debut, Nothing Happens, expectations were high and uncertain for Model. This time, Wallows has refined their sound, creating an album that feels like a perfect fit for the band. The instrumentals, lyrics and overall vibe of the album showcase what makes Wallows unique. Model clearly demonstrates that Wallows has found their stride as musicians, and solidifies the fact that they’re poised to leave a significant mark on the music world.

Model starts out with the band’s comeback single “Your Apartment,” which immediately became a classic among fans. It perfectly encapsulates Wallows’ signature sound with its harmonious instrumentals and emotionally resonant lyrics. The lush guitar riffs, recurrent instrumentals and poetic storytelling immediately draw listeners in.

“Your Apartment” sets the tone for Model by highlighting Wallows’ unique ability to blend indie pop/rock with relatable lyrics. The song reintroduces Wallows not only as the musicians we know and love, but as a fully matured band with a compelling story to tell.

As listeners progress through Model’s tracks, they will encounter a diverse array of soundscapes. The album incorporates elements of synth-pop, alternative rock, and electronic sounds reminiscent of Tell Me That It's Over

From the summer vibes and catchy hook of “Calling After Me” to the dream pop masterpiece that is “Bad Dream,” Model offers something for everyone. Each song is carefully crafted to provide a unique listening experience while contributing to the album’s cohesive narrative and sound. This variation not only keeps listeners fully engaged but also showcases Wallows’ growth and willingness to experiment within their musical comfort zone.

The album boasts several standout tracks that exemplify Wallows' artistic prowess and musical range. "Going Under" serves as a stunning album highlight, showcasing Wallows' ability to blend emotional depth with musical intricacy. It immediately captivates listeners with lead singer Braeden Lemasters' euphonic vocals, which seamlessly transition into guttural outcries in the second verse, as he shouts, “but you know I will never leave / just give me time to think.”

The final track, “Only Ecstasy,” sung by Dylan Minnette, uses haunting and heartfelt lyricism to explain the depth of his love, particularly in the lines “I can see generations in your face / I see the eyes of unborn daughters, I see you on a deathbed too.” Fans may recognize this track from Wallows' memorable performance at Lollapalooza Aftershow in August of 2023.

“Going Under” and “Only Ecstasy,” among Model’s other tracks, stand as a testament to Wallows' skill in crafting profound and impactful music that lingers in the listener's mind long after the final note fades away.

Model delivers a long-awaited musical homecoming for dedicated fans while extending a warm invitation to newcomers. With its robust instrumentals and passionate lyrics, the album offers a unique listening experience tailored for enthusiasts of the indie pop/rock genre. Yet, beyond its surface, Model signifies a pivotal moment in Wallows' evolution as artists and their establishment within the genre: their willingness to experiment and evolve within their comfort zone.

As listeners traverse through the intricate cityscape of sounds, the stage is set for their continued growth and innovation. It's a musical journey that not only stakes their claim, but also promises exciting horizons of exploration and creativity.
