HIP-HOP TO HONKY TONK: YUNG GRAVY GOES COUNTRY

It seems like everyone is putting out country music, and Yung Gravy is no exception. Gravy is proving his versatility in his new genre-bending album, “Serving Country” via Republic Records. Traversing uncharted territory, the record delivers an unexpectedly catchy fusion of Gravy’s signature humored rap and southern twang.

Inspired by the talented country artists around him, Gravy teamed up with Diamond Pistols (blackbear, bbno$, Joji) and decided it was time for him to switch things up.

“I needed to do something completely new. I met a lot of people in country, they were so cool and welcoming. Diamond Pistols and I got to working on it and we just loved it and had such a blast that we just made a whole album.”

The fourteen-track record houses 5 collaborations between Gravy and various artists including Zac Brown, Shania Twain and Juicy J. “My Garage” featuring Brown is accompanied by an americana-themed music video that sets the visual scene of Gravy’s new country era.

The album originally concerned fans of Gravy, has many were loyal to his rap hits, but stands its ground well. The record definitely isn’t your uncle’s style of country, as it leans more hip-hop and less straw-in-mouth. Most of the tracks are backed by catchy beats and laced with cheeky lyrics.

“I don’t think about genre when I make music. A lot of times I have trouble saying what it is if I have to put it in something. This album, when I got to pick, I put pop, country, hip-hop and new country.”

“Serving Country” is sure to appeal to country and hip-hop fans alike, and is an exemplary testament of a successful country pivot. Gravy is set to head off on his Grits and Gravy tour in the fall, with the first stop being Des Moines Iowa on September 1. Be sure to check out “Serving Country,” and maybe catch the Gravy Train at the upcoming tour.
