MAUDE LATOUR’S “SUGAR WATER” IS AN ALCHEMY OF POP PERFECTION
Looking for the soundtrack to your next sequin-studded, intergalactic joyride?
Maybe just a terrestrial night out?
If so, Maude Latour has you covered with her debut album, Sugar Water. The indie pop it-girl is making a splash with her first record, delivering iridescent, danceable tracks that the world craves. Latour has solidified her standing as a popstar princess with 12 transcendental songs commemorating adoration, firsts and rose-tinted memories.
The Columbia graduate’s already hit-boasting discography is filled with singles and EPs that have garnered cult followings — most notably her longing-filled affection anthem, “One More Weekend.” After waiting her entire life, Latour now feels ready to put out her first full-length project.
“I didn't want it to be songs that were just grouped together by chance, I needed to tell a story, a continuous story, and finally, I had 2 years of writing that I could do that,” Latour remarks.
Fans got a taste of the Sugar Water universe with the four singles released prior to the record: “Too Slow,” which puts friendship into hyperdrive, “Cursed Romantics,” the perfect modern pop song that's reminiscent of the 2010s radio, “Comedown,” an ode to nostalgic youth and most recent, “Whirlpool,” which sends listeners through the Sugar Water portal.
“The truth is any of the songs on the album could've been presented as the singles and it would've changed the energy of the anticipation towards the body work. I hope people still listen to albums because my favorite songs are also the non-singles.I really really hope people listen.”
Sugar Water demonstrates Latour’s versatility – mastering synergy between the sonic identity fans are devoted to and new experimental elements. The record is laced with entrancing instrumentals, alchemic lyrics and honeyed vocals that offer something for everyone. Opening with computerized crash track, “Officially Mine”, listeners are immediately transported to Latour’s positively saccharine realm of Sugar Water. Fast-paced, windows-down compositions permeate the record, taking satisfying breaks for more lulled tracks, including hypnotic ballads, “Whirlpool” and “Cosmic Superstar Girl.” “Bloom” concludes the record with mystic instrumentals and affirmations that perfectly encapsulate the divine body of work that is Sugar Water.
“My personal goal with my music is to have it grow and complexify with me, I want each body of work to push something inside me to a new place I didn't know existed. I hope this body of work did that too.”
Latour couldn’t wait until fans were able to call the record theirs, and now eagerly anticipates bringing the work to life on the yet-to-come Sugar Water tour. This album is genuine and powerful. It’s visceral and the epitome of Maude Latour. This album will leave you changed from the person you were before it.
When asked what she hoped listeners take away from the album, Maude’s response was nothing short of a Maude response, and so. Profoundly. Beautiful.
“I hope they feel that their life is a journey, a movie, an adventure. I hope that they feel brave for their future, and the highs and lows of living, losing, loving people. I hope they feel connected to their inner groundedness. Their voice. Their story, themselves. I hope that they feel open to life. Whatever is to come.”
